New Buckenham Players are an Amateur Dramatics Group. The Players began with a conversation at the bar of the King’s Head in Autumn 1978. Our first production took place in April 1979 and was an evening of Victorian Melodrama. The following year we staged the first of 3 Mummers Plays in Buckenham’s mediaeval castle and by the 1980’s were producing an annual pantomime and other shows during the year.
Since then our programme has been varied and quite ambitious ranging from classics to comedy, musicals to monologues.
Our earlier shows were put on (with some ingenuity) in the old ‘ tin tabernacle ‘ village hall in Marsh Lane but since 1995 we have enjoyed all the excellent facilities afforded to us in the new Village Hall which is fully equipped as a theatre.
Recent past productions have included The Importance of Being Earnest, Under Milk Wood, ‘Allo ‘Allo, Peter Pan, Rough Justice, Farndale’s Christmas Carol, Rumours and Snow White.
HOW WE WORK
Our season consists of one play in the Summer, whilst at Christmas we alternate between traditional pantomimes and productions such as a Christmas Carol. This diversity allows participation both on and off stage by a wide age range, this is especially so with the December shows when we encourage junior members involvement.
Any member can propose a play, although generally they are suggested by someone interested in directing and we very much encourage new directors.
Open auditions are held and once a cast has been chosen rehearsals run for about 12 weeks on Tuesday evenings in the Village Hall. In the final week we rehearse at the weekend and every night.
Whilst we take our theatre seriously, we do set out to have fun and keep in touch with all members with a regular newsletter.
A committee meets regularly to help run the Players and support the Director. We hold full Liability Insurance, have a Child Protection Policy and are affiliated to NODA ( the National Operatic and Dramatic Association.
